Derail is a public interest 501(c) corporation formed to educate the public about the proposed High Speed Rail (HSR) project in California. The project has so many negatives that all funding should cease and California voters should defeat soundly the 9.95 Billion Dollar bond ballot measure that will appear on the upcoming Nov 2008 election ballot.
There are many web sites on the Internet that encourage the creation of the California High Speed Rail (CHSR) project. We believe that some of these web sites are sponsored and supported with funds from HSR advocates. They are thus acting as “fronts” for purposes of promoting passage of the $9.95 Billion bond. The California High Speed Rail Authority (CHSRA), which is a state government agency, cannot legally spend time and money promoting this issue. The CHSRA is simply using these “front” groups to do this work for them.
This web site is not one of those.
Our site may well be the only web site that opposes the creation of the High Speed Rail on economic and geo-political grounds. Browsing through this web site will provide arguments that contradict the statements made by the CHSRA. We invite you to think about what is being said by the news media and the rail promoters and re-consider if those statements have authenticity and plausibility.
Statements we have made are being refuted, not on substantive or factual grounds, but on the basis of our residence. Indeed the founders of DeRail live in close proximity to the Caltrain rail corridor. In short, we are therefore called NIMBYs. Let us put this issue to rest. Many others who live far from the rail corridor are referenced in the web site. What we are stating would with equal fervor, be factual wherever we live. Furthermore, we acknowledge that we are indeed NIMBYs and that the state of California is our “back yard,” one in which we live, work and play. We believe that in this Democracy we have a right and an obligation to state what we understand to be in the best interests of all our fellow Californians.
We believe that the development of this project will be a financial disaster for all Californians, except those who stand to profit mightily from the anticipated largesse of state, federal and private funding.
